About the Region & Location Map
The Auckland Region, bordered by both the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean, enjoys relatively mild coastal water temperatures by New Zealand standards. Over summer, from December through February, sea temperatures typically range between 18°C and 22°C, making it a popular time for a dip at beaches along the east coast, such as those around the Hauraki Gulf, and the wilder west coast shores. In winter, coastal waters usually cool to around 14°C to 16°C. Swimming is allowed at most beaches, and during the warmer months conditions are generally comfortable for the average swimmer, especially on calm days. However, the west coast beaches can have strong rips and surf, so swimmers are encouraged to stay between the flags where lifeguards patrol.
Across the region’s lakes and rivers, water temperatures tend to vary more quickly with the weather. In summer, smaller lakes can reach 19°C to 23°C, while rivers often sit between 16°C and 20°C, depending on flow and rainfall. During winter, inland waters may drop to 10°C to 14°C, feeling brisk for most people. Swimming is permitted in many freshwater spots, provided water quality is suitable and there are no safety advisories. On warm, settled days, locals and visitors alike make the most of these swimming holes, but it’s always wise to check conditions, as heavy rain can affect clarity and safety.
