About the Region & Location Map
Southland Region, at the southernmost edge of New Zealand, experiences some of the coolest coastal water temperatures in the country. Over summer, from December to February, sea temperatures along the Southern Ocean and Foveaux Strait generally range between 12°C and 15°C, occasionally reaching around 16°C in late summer. Even in the warmest months, the water feels distinctly brisk. In winter, coastal temperatures commonly drop to between 8°C and 11°C. Swimming is allowed at many beaches, but conditions can be challenging due to cold water, strong currents and rapidly changing weather. For this reason, summer offers the most comfortable opportunities, and swimmers should choose sheltered spots and take care.
Inland, Southland’s rivers and lakes are strongly influenced by alpine sources and cooler air temperatures. During summer, freshwater temperatures often range from 13°C to 18°C in lower-lying lakes, while higher-altitude or glacial-fed waters can remain colder. In winter, inland waters frequently fall to between 1°C and 8°C, particularly in elevated areas. Swimming is generally permitted where water quality is suitable and no health advisories are in place, although the cold temperatures mean swims are often short. On fine summer days, however, many lakes and slower river sections provide refreshing and rewarding swimming experiences.
