Lake Tūtira, in northern Hawke’s Bay, is a shallow coastal lake set within rolling hill country between Napier and Wairoa. Because it is relatively shallow, its water temperature responds quickly to seasonal air conditions. In winter, surface temperatures are generally around 9–13°C. During spring, the lake warms gradually to approximately 14–18°C. In summer, particularly in January and February, water temperatures can reach about 20–25°C on warm, settled days, especially in sheltered areas with limited wind. By autumn, temperatures usually ease back to between 15 and 19°C. Strong winds and rainfall can cause short-term changes, as the shallow lake mixes easily.
