Kawakawa Bay lies on the eastern edge of the Auckland Region, facing the Hauraki Gulf and the wider Pacific Ocean. The bay is relatively sheltered compared with the open west coast, and this often allows the water to warm a little more during settled weather. In summer, particularly from January through March, sea temperatures usually range between 19 and 22°C, which most locals find comfortable for swimming. Through autumn, the water gradually cools to around 17 to 20°C. Winter temperatures generally sit between 14 and 16°C, while spring sees a steady rise from about 15 up to 18°C. Calm days with light winds can make the surface feel even milder, especially in the shallower areas near the shore.
