Auckland is surrounded by water, with coastlines along the Hauraki Gulf and the wider Pacific Ocean, giving it a wide range of swimming spots from sheltered bays to more exposed beaches. Sea temperatures follow a typical upper North Island pattern. In summer, especially from January through March, water temperatures usually range between 19 and 22°C, which most locals consider comfortable for regular swimming. During autumn, the sea gradually cools to around 17 to 20°C. Winter brings cooler conditions, typically between 14 and 16°C, while spring sees temperatures rise steadily from about 15 up to 18°C. Sheltered beaches can feel slightly warmer on calm, sunny days.
