Rabbit Island, also known as Moturoa, sits in Tasman Bay near Nelson and is influenced by the wider waters of Cook Strait. The surrounding sea is generally calmer than fully exposed strait coastlines, and water temperatures are among the milder in the top of the South Island. In winter, from June to August, the water typically ranges between 10–13°C, which feels cool and is usually only comfortable for hardy swimmers or those wearing full wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures gradually lift to around 12–15°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the warmest conditions, with sea temperatures commonly sitting between 17–21°C during settled, sunny spells. Early autumn can still see 16–18°C before cooling again as winter approaches.
