Medlands Beach is a long, sandy beach in the Tasman Region, facing Tasman Bay and influenced by tidal movement linked to Cook Strait. While it has a relatively open aspect compared to some smaller inlets, it still benefits from the generally milder waters at the top of the South Island. In winter, from June to August, sea temperatures typically range between 10–13°C, which feels cool and is usually only comfortable for hardy swimmers or those wearing full wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures gradually rise to around 12–15°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the warmest conditions, with water temperatures commonly sitting between 17–21°C during settled, sunny spells. Early autumn can still see 16–18°C before cooling again as winter approaches.
