Nelson sits at the top of the South Island, where Tasman Bay meets the outer reaches of Cook Strait. Sea temperatures here are influenced by tidal movement through the strait but are generally milder than many southern locations. In winter, from June to August, the water typically ranges between 10–13°C, which feels cool and is usually only comfortable for hardy swimmers or those wearing full wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures gradually lift to around 12–15°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the warmest conditions, with sea temperatures commonly sitting between 17–20°C during settled, sunny spells. Early autumn can still see 16–18°C before cooling again as winter approaches.
