Water temperatures here are generally milder than many exposed South Island coastlines. In winter, from June to August, the sea typically ranges between 10–13°C, which feels cool and is usually only comfortable for hardy swimmers or those wearing full wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures gradually lift to around 12–15°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the warmest conditions, with water temperatures commonly sitting between 17–21°C during settled, sunny spells. Early autumn can still see 16–18°C before cooling again as winter approaches.

Swimming is allowed at Kina Beach and it’s a popular local choice during the warmer months.
