Waiheke Island sits in the Hauraki Gulf within the Auckland Region, surrounded by relatively sheltered Pacific waters. Because many of its beaches are protected from strong ocean swells, sea temperatures can feel slightly warmer and more stable than on exposed coastlines. In summer, particularly from January to March, water temperatures typically range between 19 and 22°C, which most locals find very comfortable for swimming and snorkelling. Through autumn, temperatures ease back to around 17 to 20°C. Winter brings cooler conditions, usually between 14 and 16°C, while spring sees a gradual rise from roughly 15 up to 18°C. Calm, sunny days can allow shallow bays to warm up quickly.
