Coromandel town sits on the western side of the Coromandel Peninsula in the Waikato Region, overlooking the sheltered waters of the Hauraki Gulf in the Pacific Ocean. Because it faces the gulf rather than the open ocean, sea conditions are often calmer and more predictable. In summer, particularly from January through March, water temperatures generally range between 19 and 22°C. Most locals consider this comfortable for swimming, especially on warm, settled days when shallow bays can warm slightly more. During autumn, temperatures ease back to around 17 to 20°C. Winter brings cooler readings, typically between 14 and 16°C, while spring sees a gradual rise from roughly 15 up to 18°C as the weather improves.
