Riverton / Aparima is a small coastal town in the Southland Region, set on the shores of Foveaux Strait near the mouth of the Aparima River. Water temperatures here reflect the cool southern location and the tidal movement of the strait. In winter, from June to August, the sea generally ranges between 8–11°C, which feels very cold and is usually only comfortable for hardy swimmers or those wearing full wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures gradually rise to around 10–13°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the mildest conditions, with water temperatures commonly sitting between 13–16°C during settled spells.
