Fortrose is a small coastal settlement in the Southland Region, set near the mouth of the Mataura River and facing the Pacific Ocean on the southern edge of the South Island. Sea temperatures here reflect the cool southern latitude and exposure to open ocean conditions. In winter, from June to August, the water generally ranges between 8–11°C, which feels very cold and is usually only comfortable for hardy swimmers or those wearing full wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures gradually lift to around 10–13°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the mildest conditions, with sea temperatures commonly sitting between 13–16°C during settled, sunny spells. Early autumn can still see 12–15°C before cooling again as winter approaches.
