Ōhope, in the eastern Bay of Plenty, sits between the open Pacific Ocean and the sheltered waters of Ōhiwa Harbour. Sea temperatures along the ocean beach are relatively mild by Aotearoa standards. Over summer, particularly from January to March, water temperatures usually range between 19–22°C, which most people find comfortable for swimming and spending time in the surf. In spring and autumn, the ocean generally sits around 16–19°C. It’s still swimmable for many, although it can feel cool when you first step in. During winter, temperatures often fall to about 13–15°C, making the water brisk and better suited to short dips or swimmers in wetsuits.
