Omaio, on the remote eastern coastline of the Bay of Plenty, looks out over the open Pacific Ocean and offers a rugged, largely undeveloped beach environment. Sea temperatures here follow the typical eastern North Island pattern. In the height of summer, from January through March, water temperatures usually range between 19–22°C. These conditions are comfortable for most swimmers, especially on warm, settled days when the sea is relatively calm. During spring and autumn, the ocean generally sits around 16–19°C, which is still suitable for a dip, although it can feel cool on first entry. In winter, temperatures often fall to about 13–15°C, making the water noticeably brisk and better suited to short swims or those wearing wetsuits.
