Coastlands, just west of Whakatāne in the Bay of Plenty, faces the open Pacific Ocean and experiences sea temperatures typical of the eastern North Island coastline. During the height of summer, from January to March, water temperatures generally range between 19–22°C. At this time of year, most locals find conditions comfortable for swimming, particularly on calm days with light winds. Through spring and autumn, the ocean usually sits around 16–19°C, which is still suitable for a swim, although it can feel fresh on entry. In winter, temperatures often drop to about 13–15°C, making the water noticeably cool and better suited to short dips or swimmers wearing wetsuits.
