Ocean Beach in Hawke’s Bay sits on an exposed stretch of Pacific coastline south of Cape Kidnappers, and its sea temperatures reflect typical east coast conditions. During winter, from June to August, water temperatures generally range between 13–15°C, which feels distinctly cold and is best suited to surfers or swimmers wearing wetsuits. Through spring the ocean gradually warms to around 15–17°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the most comfortable period for swimming, with temperatures commonly sitting between 19–22°C during settled, sunny spells. In early autumn the sea can still hold at 18–20°C before steadily cooling again as winter approaches.
