Kaka Point is a small seaside settlement in the Catlins area of the Otago Region, facing the open Pacific Ocean. Sea temperatures here reflect the cool southern waters typical of this part of the South Island. In winter, from June to August, the water generally ranges between 9–12°C, which feels very cold and is usually only comfortable for hardy swimmers or those wearing full wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures gradually rise to around 11–14°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the mildest conditions, with sea temperatures commonly sitting between 14–17°C during settled, sunny spells. Early autumn can still see 13–15°C before cooling again as winter approaches.
