Ākitio is a small and remote coastal settlement on the lower east coast of the North Island, within the Manawatū–Whanganui region, facing directly out to the Pacific Ocean. Sea temperatures here follow a typical pattern for this stretch of coastline. In winter, from June through August, the water generally sits between 12–14°C, which feels properly cold and is usually suited to surfers or swimmers in wetsuits. As spring progresses, temperatures rise gradually to around 14–16°C. Summer, from December to March, offers the most comfortable conditions, with sea temperatures commonly ranging between 18–21°C during settled spells. Early autumn can still see the ocean holding at 17–19°C before cooling again heading into winter.
