Riversdale Beach is a popular coastal settlement in the Wellington Region’s Wairarapa, facing directly out to the Pacific Ocean. Sea temperatures here reflect the cooler conditions typical of the lower North Island east coast. In winter, from June to August, the water generally ranges between 11–14°C, which feels distinctly cold and is usually best suited to surfers or swimmers wearing wetsuits. Through spring the ocean gradually warms to around 14–16°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the most comfortable period for swimming, with sea temperatures commonly sitting between 17–20°C during settled, sunny spells. Early autumn can still see the water holding at 16–18°C before cooling again heading into winter.
