Te Arai Beach lies north of Auckland, facing the open Pacific Ocean and forming part of a long, undeveloped stretch of coastline. The beach is more exposed than sheltered gulf bays, so sea conditions can be energetic at times. In summer, particularly from January through March, water temperatures generally range between 19 and 22°C. Most locals find this comfortable enough for swimming on warm days, although the open coast can make the water feel cooler. During autumn, temperatures ease back to around 17 to 20°C. Winter brings cooler readings, typically between 14 and 16°C, while spring sees a gradual rise from roughly 15 up to 18°C as the weather improves. Wind and swell can cause short-term variations in surface temperature.
