Kawau Island lies in the Hauraki Gulf north of Auckland, surrounded by sheltered Pacific waters and dotted with small bays and inlets. Thanks to its position within the gulf, sea conditions are often calmer than on exposed ocean beaches. In summer, particularly from January through March, water temperatures generally range between 19 and 22°C. At these levels, most locals find the sea comfortable for swimming, especially on warm, settled days when shallow coves can warm up slightly more. During autumn, temperatures ease back to around 17 to 20°C.
