** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

Location & Local Information

The Mōtū River flows through remote hill country in the eastern North Island, running from the ranges inland of Ōpōtiki to the Pacific coast. Its water is typically clear and fast-moving, reflecting its largely undeveloped catchment. Because the river rises in elevated terrain, temperatures remain relatively cool for much of the year. In winter, water temperatures usually range from about 8–11°C. During spring, they increase to around 12–16°C as air temperatures climb. In summer, especially in sheltered and slower-flowing stretches, the river can reach approximately 17–21°C, while autumn sees a gradual drop back to roughly 13–17°C. After heavy rain, temperatures may briefly decrease due to runoff from the surrounding hills.

Swimming Conditions

Swimming is generally allowed in the Mōtū River, and in summer it can provide a refreshing dip in selected calm sections. However, the river is known for its strong current, rapids, and changing flow conditions, particularly after rainfall. Swimmers should choose quiet pools away from fast channels and avoid entering the water during high flows. When summer temperatures approach or exceed 18°C, swimming is more comfortable, though still cooler than many coastal beaches. As with other New Zealand rivers, it is advisable to check local water quality information, especially after rain, to ensure conditions are suitable for swimming.
