*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

The Ngaruroro River in Hawke’s Bay flows from the Ruahine Ranges down to the coast near Napier, bringing clear, fast-moving water through rural landscapes and gravel beds. Water temperatures vary noticeably through the year. In winter, the river is cold, typically around 7–10°C in the upper reaches and slightly milder, about 9–12°C, further downstream. During spring, temperatures gradually rise to between 12 and 16°C. In summer, especially in January and February, the river can reach 17–21°C in calmer stretches and shallow swimming holes, while autumn usually sees a drop back to around 13–17°C. After heavy rain, temperatures may dip temporarily due to snowmelt and runoff from the ranges.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is generally allowed in the Ngaruroro River, and locals often use selected spots for a refreshing dip, particularly during the warmer months. However, conditions can change quickly. The river has a strong current in places, braided channels, and uneven gravel beds, so swimmers should choose slower-flowing sections and avoid periods of high flow after rain. In summer, when water temperatures approach or exceed 18°C, swimming is more comfortable, though still cooler than coastal beaches. As with many New Zealand rivers, checking local water quality updates is recommended, especially after rainfall, to ensure safe swimming conditions.
