Golden Bay lies at the northern tip of the South Island in the Tasman Region, opening toward Cook Strait but largely enclosed by Farewell Spit and surrounding hills. This sheltered geography helps moderate sea conditions and allows surface waters to warm more than many exposed coastlines. In winter, from June to August, water temperatures generally range between 10–13°C, which feels cool and is usually suitable only for short swims or with a wetsuit. Through spring, temperatures gradually rise to around 12–15°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the warmest conditions, with sea temperatures commonly sitting between 18–22°C during settled, sunny spells. Early autumn can still see 16–19°C before cooling again as winter approaches.
