Mangarākau is a remote coastal area in the northwest of the Tasman Region, facing the Tasman Sea along a largely undeveloped and wild stretch of shoreline. Water temperatures here reflect the open sea influence and the cooler currents moving up the west coast. In winter, from June to August, the sea generally ranges between 10–13°C, which feels distinctly cold and is usually only comfortable for hardy swimmers or those wearing full wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures gradually lift to around 12–15°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the mildest conditions, with sea temperatures commonly sitting between 16–20°C during settled spells. Early autumn can still see 15–18°C before cooling again as winter approaches.
