*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

The Ruamāhanga River flows through the Wairarapa in the Wellington Region, winding from the Tararua Ranges across farmland and wetlands before reaching Lake Wairarapa. As a lowland river without direct alpine snowmelt, its water temperature varies mainly with seasonal air conditions. In winter, temperatures are generally around 8–12°C. Through spring, the river gradually warms to approximately 12–16°C. During summer, especially in January and February, calmer stretches and deeper pools can reach about 18–23°C on warm days. In autumn, temperatures usually ease back to between 13 and 17°C. After heavy rainfall, cooler runoff and increased flow can briefly lower temperatures and reduce water clarity.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is allowed in parts of the Ruamāhanga River, and local residents often use known swimming holes during the warmer months. The most comfortable conditions are typically in mid to late summer when water temperatures are near or above 18°C and river levels are stable. However, swimmers should be aware that currents can be stronger in narrower sections, and depths may change due to shifting gravel beds. It is advisable to avoid swimming shortly after heavy rain, when flows rise and water quality may be affected by runoff. Checking regional water quality updates before entering the river helps ensure safe swimming conditions.
