The Awatere River in the Marlborough District rises in the Inland Kaikōura Range and flows east through a broad valley before reaching the Pacific Ocean south of Blenheim. As an alpine-fed river, its water remains relatively cool throughout the year. In winter, temperatures are typically around 6–9°C, especially in the upper reaches. During spring, snowmelt and fresh rainfall keep the river brisk, generally between 8 and 13°C. In summer, particularly in January and February, slower-moving sections and shallower braids in the lower valley may warm to around 14–18°C on settled, sunny days. By autumn, temperatures usually ease back to roughly 9–14°C. Sudden weather changes in the headwaters can quickly affect both flow and temperature.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is allowed in parts of the Awatere River, but conditions require caution. The river is braided, with shifting gravel channels, uneven depths and a steady current in many sections.
