Le Bons Bay is a sheltered inlet on Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury Region, opening to the Pacific Ocean but partly protected by surrounding headlands. Sea temperatures here reflect the cool eastern waters typical of Canterbury, though the bay can feel slightly milder than fully exposed stretches of coast. In winter, from June to August, the water generally ranges between 9–12°C, which feels properly cold and is usually only comfortable for hardy swimmers or those wearing full wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures gradually rise to around 11–14°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the mildest conditions, with sea temperatures commonly sitting between 14–18°C during settled spells. Early autumn can still see 13–16°C before cooling again as winter approaches.
