Christchurch sits on the east coast of the South Island in the Canterbury Region, with easy access to the Pacific Ocean at beaches such as Sumner, New Brighton and Taylor’s Mistake. Sea temperatures here reflect the cool eastern waters typical of this latitude. In winter, from June to August, the water generally ranges between 8–11°C, which feels properly cold and is usually only comfortable for hardy swimmers or those wearing full wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures gradually lift to around 10–13°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the mildest conditions, with sea temperatures commonly sitting between 14–18°C during settled, sunny spells. Early autumn can still see 13–16°C before cooling again as winter approaches.
