*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual lake water temperatures may differ from the reported values by several degrees, particularly during periods of strong winds or rapid weather changes. Wind can mix surface and deeper layers in a lake, bringing cooler water to the surface, while shallow areas may warm more quickly under direct sunlight. Air temperature, sunshine, and cloud cover strongly influence how quickly a lake heats up or cools down. These factors can lead to noticeable temperature variations across different parts of the lake.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time lake temperature observations, historical trends, seasonal cycles, wind strength and direction, and region-specific air temperature. To enhance accuracy, we also incorporate data from nearby monitored locations and comparable lakes within New Zealand.

Location & Local Information

Lake Waikaremoana, in northern Hawke’s Bay within Te Urewera, is a large, deep lake surrounded by forested hills and rugged country. Formed by a historic landslide, it holds clear freshwater that reflects seasonal air temperatures and its elevated inland setting. In winter, surface temperatures are generally around 8–12°C. During spring, the lake gradually warms to approximately 12–16°C as conditions become milder. In summer, particularly in January and February, sheltered bays and near-shore areas can reach about 18–22°C on warm, settled days, while deeper water remains cooler. By autumn, temperatures usually ease back to between 13 and 17°C. Wind and rainfall can cause short-term fluctuations, especially along more exposed shorelines.

Swimming Conditions

Swimming is allowed at many accessible points around Lake Waikaremoana, including beaches near campsites and walking track access points. The most comfortable conditions are typically in mid to late summer when water temperatures approach or exceed 18°C and winds are light. However, the lake is large and weather in this area can change quickly, creating choppy conditions. Swimmers should choose sheltered bays and calm days, and be aware that the water can feel cooler away from the shoreline. Checking local weather conditions before entering the water is recommended for a safe and enjoyable experience.
