Lake Waikaremoana, in northern Hawke’s Bay within Te Urewera, is a large, deep lake surrounded by forested hills and rugged country. Formed by a historic landslide, it holds clear freshwater that reflects seasonal air temperatures and its elevated inland setting. In winter, surface temperatures are generally around 8–12°C. During spring, the lake gradually warms to approximately 12–16°C as conditions become milder. In summer, particularly in January and February, sheltered bays and near-shore areas can reach about 18–22°C on warm, settled days, while deeper water remains cooler. By autumn, temperatures usually ease back to between 13 and 17°C. Wind and rainfall can cause short-term fluctuations, especially along more exposed shorelines.
