Lake Rotopounamu, in the Waikato Region near Tūrangi, is a small, forest-fringed lake set below Mount Pihanga. Formed by a landslide and surrounded by native bush, it sits at moderate elevation, which influences its water temperature. In winter, surface temperatures are generally around 8–12°C. During spring, the lake gradually warms to approximately 12–16°C as air temperatures rise. In summer, particularly in January and February, near-shore areas can reach about 17–22°C on warm, settled days, while deeper sections remain cooler. By autumn, temperatures usually ease back to between 13 and 17°C. Wind is often light due to the sheltered setting, but rainfall can cause short-term fluctuations.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is allowed at Lake Rotopounamu, and it can be enjoyable during the warmer months when water temperatures approach or exceed 18°C.
