Lake Moawhango, in the Manawatū–Whanganui region on the central plateau, is a high-country hydro lake set among open tussock and rolling hills. Its elevation and exposure influence water temperatures throughout the year. In winter, surface temperatures are generally around 5–9°C, and frosts are common around the shoreline. During spring, snowmelt and cool winds keep the lake brisk, typically between 7 and 12°C.
