*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Maraetai is a large hydro lake formed on the Waikato River, sitting between steep forested hills in the eastern Waikato Region. Because it is part of a controlled river system, water temperatures here are influenced by seasonal weather as well as dam operations. In summer, surface temperatures usually range from about 18–22 °C, occasionally feeling warmer in sheltered bays with little wind. During spring and autumn, the lake typically cools to around 14–18 °C. In winter, temperatures often fall to roughly 10–13 °C, making the water distinctly cold for most swimmers.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in Lake Maraetai is allowed and is a popular summer activity, particularly due to the lake’s wide, calm waters compared with faster-flowing sections of the Waikato River. During warm weather, the lake is well suited to swimming, kayaking, and other water recreation, especially near accessible shoreline areas. However, as a hydro lake, water levels can change and conditions may vary near dam outlets or steep banks. Cooler months generally limit swimming to brief dips, as prolonged exposure can be uncomfortable. Overall, Lake Maraetai offers good summer swimming conditions thanks to its relatively stable, lake-like environment, while outside the warm season it is better enjoyed for boating and lakeside activities rather than regular swimming.
