Kaikōura is a coastal town in northern Canterbury, set between the Pacific Ocean and the Kaikōura Ranges. Sea temperatures here are influenced by deep offshore waters and ocean currents, which keep conditions relatively cool year-round. In winter, from June to August, the water generally ranges between 9–12°C, which feels properly cold and is usually only comfortable for hardy swimmers or those wearing full wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures gradually rise to around 11–14°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the mildest conditions, with sea temperatures commonly sitting between 15–19°C during settled, sunny spells. Early autumn can still see 14–17°C before cooling again as winter approaches.
