Wellington sits at the southern tip of the North Island, bordered by Cook Strait and Wellington Harbour. Sea temperatures here are influenced by strong tidal flows and frequent winds moving through the strait. In winter, from June to August, the water generally ranges between 10–13°C, which feels properly cold and is usually only comfortable for hardy locals or swimmers in wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures gradually lift to around 13–15°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the most pleasant conditions, with water temperatures commonly sitting between 16–19°C during settled periods. Early autumn can still see 15–17°C before the sea cools again heading into winter.
