*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

Location & Local Information

The Wairoa River in Northland flows south from the Tangihua Ranges through Dargaville before entering the Kaipara Harbour. As one of the largest rivers in Northland, its water temperature reflects the region’s warm, subtropical climate as well as tidal influence in the lower reaches. In winter, temperatures are generally around 12–16°C. During spring, the river gradually warms to approximately 16–20°C. In summer, particularly in January and February, calmer upstream sections can reach about 21–26°C on hot days, while tidally influenced areas closer to the harbour may vary slightly. By autumn, temperatures usually ease back to between 17 and 21°C. Heavy rainfall can briefly lower temperatures and increase flow and turbidity.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is allowed in parts of the Wairoa River, particularly in quieter upstream stretches away from strong currents and boat traffic. The most comfortable conditions are typically in mid to late summer when water temperatures exceed 20°C and flows are steady. However, swimmers should be cautious in tidal sections, where currents and water clarity can change. It is advisable to avoid swimming after significant rainfall, when runoff may affect water quality. Checking local conditions before entering the water helps ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience.
