The Rangitata River in the Canterbury Region rises in the Southern Alps and flows southeast across wide braided plains before reaching the Pacific Ocean. Fed by alpine snow and glacier melt, its water remains cool for most of the year. In winter, temperatures are typically around 6–9°C, particularly in the upper and middle reaches. During spring, ongoing snowmelt keeps the river brisk, generally between 8 and 12°C.
