Ōtama Beach is a long, sweeping stretch of sand on the northeastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula in the Waikato Region, facing the Pacific Ocean. Although it is open to ocean swells, offshore islands provide some natural shelter, which can help moderate conditions at times. In summer, particularly from January through March, water temperatures generally range between 19 and 22°C. Most locals find this comfortable for swimming on warm, settled days, even though the first dip can still feel fresh. During autumn, temperatures ease back to around 17 to 20°C. Winter brings cooler readings, typically between 14 and 16°C, while spring sees a gradual rise from roughly 15 up to 18°C as the season progresses. Wind direction and swell can influence short-term surface temperatures.
