Midway Beach, just west of central Gisborne, faces directly out to the Pacific Ocean and is one of the region’s most accessible stretches of coastline. Sea temperatures here follow the typical East Coast pattern. During the height of summer, from January through March, water temperatures usually range between 19–22°C, which most people find comfortable for swimming, surfing and bodyboarding. In spring and autumn, the ocean generally sits around 16–19°C. It’s still suitable for a dip, although it can feel cool when you first enter the water.
