Lake Waihola is a shallow tidal freshwater lake located south of Dunedin in the Otago Region. Its limited depth means the water warms relatively quickly in summer compared with deeper South Island lakes. During the warmest months, from December to February, surface water temperatures typically range between 17°C and 22°C, occasionally climbing slightly higher during prolonged settled weather. In spring and autumn, temperatures generally sit between 11°C and 16°C, while in winter they commonly drop to around 6°C to 9°C. Because the lake is influenced by tidal flows and inflow from surrounding catchments, temperatures can fluctuate depending on recent weather and river conditions.
Swimming Conditions
