Lake Mahinapua, in the West Coast Region south of Hokitika, is a shallow coastal lake surrounded by wetlands and native bush. Because it is relatively shallow and close to the Tasman Sea, its water temperature responds readily to seasonal air conditions. In winter, surface temperatures are generally around 8–12°C. During spring, the lake gradually warms to approximately 12–16°C, although frequent rainfall can influence clarity and short-term temperature changes. In summer, particularly in January and February, sheltered areas may reach about 17–22°C on warm, settled days. By autumn, temperatures usually ease back to between 12 and 17°C. Wind mixing and runoff from surrounding wetlands can affect surface conditions.
