Lake Kimihia, in the Waikato Region near Huntly, is a small lake formed from former coal mining land and surrounded by wetlands and walking tracks. As a shallow inland lake in the upper North Island, its water temperature follows seasonal air conditions quite closely. In winter, surface temperatures are generally around 10–14°C. During spring, the lake gradually warms to approximately 14–18°C. In summer, particularly in January and February, shallow near-shore areas can reach about 19–24°C on warm, settled days.
