Lake Camp, in the Canterbury high country near the Ashburton Lakes, is a small alpine lake surrounded by open tussock and rolling hills. Its elevation and exposure to mountain weather influence water temperatures throughout the year. In winter, surface temperatures are generally around 3–7°C, and frosts are common along the shoreline. During spring, snowmelt from nearby ranges keeps the lake cold, typically between 5 and 10°C.
