Lake Aviemore, in the Canterbury Region near Kurow, is a hydro lake formed on the Waitaki River and set among rolling high country hills. Its water temperature reflects both alpine inflows from upstream lakes and the warm, dry summers typical of inland Canterbury. In winter, surface temperatures are generally around 6–9°C. During spring, snowmelt from the Southern Alps keeps the lake cool, typically between 8 and 13°C.
