Fox River Estuary sits on the central West Coast of the South Island, where the Fox River meets the Tasman Sea in a wide, open coastal setting. Water temperatures here reflect the cooler, high-energy nature of the West Coast. In winter, from June to August, the sea typically ranges between 11–14°C, which feels very cold for most swimmers and is generally only suitable for those wearing wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures slowly lift to around 13–15°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the mildest conditions, with water temperatures usually sitting between 16–19°C during settled weather. Early autumn can still hold at about 15–17°C before cooling again as winter approaches.
