Bruce Bay is a small coastal settlement on the South Westland coast of the West Coast Region, facing directly into the Tasman Sea. Sea temperatures here reflect the cool, exposed character of this part of the South Island. In winter, from June to August, the water generally ranges between 11–13°C, which feels properly cold and is usually only comfortable for surfers or swimmers wearing full wetsuits. Through spring, temperatures gradually rise to around 13–15°C. Summer, from December to March, brings the mildest conditions, with sea temperatures commonly sitting between 15–18°C during settled, sunny spells. Early autumn can still see 14–17°C before cooling again as winter approaches.
